The purpose of CIG is to stimulate the adoption of innovative conservation approaches and technologies in conjunction with agricultural production. CIG projects present innovations that result in the transfer of conservation technologies, management systems, and inventive approaches to agricultural producers, into technical manuals and guides and for practical use in the private sector.

What Is This Program?

The purpose of On-Farm Trials is to stimulate the evaluation and adoption of innovative conservation approaches in partnership with agricultural producers. On-Farm Trials funding is designed to provide technical assistance and incentive payments to producers to help compensate for risks associated with implementing new conservation practices, systems, and approaches.

The CIG program provides financial and technical assistance to agricultural producers and non-industrial forest managers to boost natural resource conservation and improve the health of their operations. This includes funding (grants/cost-share) and expert advice on conservation practices. Significant national funding ($3+ billion from Inflation Reduction Act and $2+ billion from Farm Bill in 2024) is available for overall NRCS conservation programs, of which CIG is a part.

Other Criteria: agricultural producers, non-industrial forest managers, landowners, farmers, ranchers, must establish a farm tract number with USDA’s Farm Service Agency (if seeking financial assistance), must certify compliance with adjusted gross income limitation (AGI) provisions, must comply with highly erodible land and wetland conservation requirements (e.g., filing Form AD-1026), must have a property deed or lease agreement to show control of the property, must have an official tax ID (Social Security number or an employer ID)
