The purposes of the WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) are: (1) To provide fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs from farmers, farmers’ markets, and roadside stands to women, infants, and children who participate in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC); and (2) To expand the awareness, use, and sales at farmers’ markets and roadside stands.

What Is This Program?

The WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) is associated with the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, popularly known as WIC. The WIC Program provides supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education at no cost to income eligible pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are found to be at nutritional risk. The purposes of the WIC FMNP are: (1) To provide fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs from farmers, farmers’ markets, and roadside stands to women, infants, and children who participate in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC); and (2) To expand the awareness, use, and sales at farmers’ markets and roadside stands. Eligible WIC participants are issued FMNP coupons in addition to their regular WIC benefits. These coupons can be used to buy eligible foods from farmers, farmers markets or roadside stands that have been approved by the state agency to accept FMNP coupons.

What Benefits Are Offered?

Federal grants awarded to state agencies, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and Indian Tribal Organizations to administer the WIC Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). Federal funds support 100 percent of the food costs and 70 percent of the administrative costs of the program, enabling the provision of fresh, unprepared, locally grown fruits and vegetables to eligible WIC participants through FMNP coupons redeemable at approved farmers, farmers markets, or roadside stands.

Region: States, District of Columbia, U.S. territories, Indian Tribal Organizations

Other Criteria: State agriculture departments, State health departments, Indian Tribal Organizations (ITOs), Agencies committed to providing benefits to eligible WIC participants (Women, Infants over 4 months old, Children 1-5 years of age certified to receive WIC program benefits)
