What Is This Program?

The Formula Grants for Rural Areas Program provides capital, planning, and operating assistance to states to support public transportation in rural areas with populations of less than 50,000, where many residents often rely on public transit to reach their destinations. The Tribal Transit Formula Program provides funding to federally recognized tribes for capital, operating, planning, and administrative expenses in rural tribal communities. The Tribal Transit Competitive Program provides funding to federally recognized tribes through a competitive process for capital, operating, planning, and administrative expenses in rural tribal communities.

What Benefits Are Offered?

Annual formula grants and discretionary funding, along with technical assistance, to support and expand public transportation systems, especially those in rural areas and serving tribal communities. FTA invests over $20 billion annually across its programs, including $5.1 billion for Buses and Bus Facilities and $5.6 billion for Low or No Emission Bus Grants through 2026. This funding helps improve mobility, reduce environmental impact, and enhance transit safety and efficiency.
