What Is This Program?

Assist states and units of local government to collect, process, and increase their capacity to process DNA evidence for entry into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) to reduce DNA processing backlogs, improve the timeliness of testing, and increase investigation and prosecution of violent cold case crimes in which suspects have been identified through DNA evidence.

Provides funding to prosecute violent cold case crimes and decrease the number of violent cold case crimes awaiting prosecution. Also offers direct assistance to increase the capacity of state and local prosecuting agencies to address these crimes, supporting investigative activities and crime/forensic analyses for cases with suspect DNA profiles.

Who Is Eligible?

Industries: public safety, justice, law enforcement, forensic science

Region: United States, state, local, tribal

Other Criteria: State governments, Special district governments, City or township governments, County governments, American tribal organizations (other than federally recognized tribal governments), American tribal governments (federally recognized), Prosecuting agencies, law enforcement, state agencies, or local crime laboratories may partner with the lead applicant, A prosecuting entity must be fully engaged in the project (either as lead applicant or with a letter of support), For violent cold case crimes where suspect DNA profiles have been developed, Cold case crime defined as FBI UCR Part 1 violent crime, missing persons, or unidentified persons case, unsolved at deadline, with potential for resolution through forensic techniques/technologies or newly acquired information/advanced technologies
