Congress directed the National Telecommunications and Information Administration to deploy the BEAD program through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, 2022 because of the need to connect the remaining 4.8 million unserved and underserved locations in America lacking access to high-speed broadband. What Is This Program?

The BEAD program works to expand broadband access to all 56 states and territories of the United States by subsidizing funding of last-mile broadband infrastructure to โ€œunservedโ€ and โ€œunderservedโ€ residential and commercial locations. Eligible entities authorized to apply for grants under the Broadband, Equity Access, and Deployment Program include any State of the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands.
