Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program

The program responds to the current shortage of large animal veterinarians in rural areas by encouraging veterinarians, through loan repayment, to provide veterinary service in designated shortage areas. To carry out a program of entering into agreements with veterinarians under which the Secretary shall pay specified amounts of the principal and interest of qualifying educational loans of the veterinarians.

Offset a significant portion of student loan debt incurred from veterinary medicine degrees by receiving up to $40,000 per year towards principal and interest on qualified government and commercial educational loans for a three-year service commitment in a designated veterinary shortage area.

Other Criteria: Qualified veterinarians, Have significant student loan debt incurred from a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent from an accredited college, Agree to provide veterinary services in a designated high-priority veterinary shortage situation, Commit to at least three years of service in a designated veterinary shortage area
