This program supports the health and expansion of urban and community forests to improve environmental quality, conserve energy, improve air quality, and enhance community well-being. It provides financial, technical, and educational assistance to states, local governments, and nonprofit organizations for tree planting, maintenance, utilization, and public outreach. The program also administers competitive cost-share grants and works with the National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Counci

What Is This Program?

To assist State Foresters, equivalent State agencies, Tribal nations, interested members of the public and private non-profit organizations in urban and community forestry programs in cities and communities. The National Urban & Community Forestry Challenge Grant Program provides a national competitive urban and community forestry challenge cost share grant that addresses national issues affecting communities and their urban natural resources across the country. The grant categories address the goals and strategies in the National Ten Year Urban and Community Forestry Action Plan (2016-2026) that was developed by the National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council (NUCFAC) in conjunction with the public.

What Benefits Are Offered?

Reimbursement for travel expenses, lodging, and daily per diem for attending in-person advisory council meetings. Members serve a 3-year term on a national advisory council, influencing federal policy, evaluating action plans, and developing criteria for grant programs related to urban and community forestry.

Who Is Eligible?

Industries: urban and community forestry

Demographics: broad inclusivity encouraged (race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, age, marital status, family/parental status, income derived from a public assistance program, political beliefs, or any other characteristic protected by law)

Other Criteria: qualified candidates, expertise in urban and community forestry, representing the scope of Urban and Community Forestry, willingness to serve a 3-year term (with possibility of one renewal), ability to attend virtual and in-person public meetings (multiple days, several times a year), ability to serve on National Grant Review Panels, willingness to network with represented populations/organizations
