What Is This Program?

Eligible applicants for the MPPEP grants include an individual, sole proprietor business or other business entities (regardless of legal structure) engaged or proposing to engage in meat and poultry processing, including federally recognized Tribes and tribal entities, for-profit entities, non-profit entities, and State or local government entities. Applicants must engage or propose to engage in slaughter and/or further processing with plans to operate under USDA, tribal or state-equivalent inspection. Private entities must be independently owned and operated, and all entities must be domestically owned.

What Benefits Are Offered?

Provides competitive grant funding (up to $1 million or 50% of project costs, whichever is less) for eligible meat and poultry processors to expand capacity. Specifically for Phase 3, funding is targeted at processing wild-caught invasive catfish. Grants can cover purchasing/upgrading various equipment (processing, manufacturing, composting, packaging, labeling), automating functions, ensuring food safety, reducing emissions, facility improvements, compliance with safety requirements, and staffing/operational costs directly tied to the project. A 50% cost share of total project costs is required.

Industries: meat processing, poultry processing, seafood processing, catfish processing

Region: United States

Other Criteria: currently process seafood or wild-caught catfish for commercial markets, in business for more than one year, operate or plan to operate under a grant of inspection from USDA to process invasive, wild-caught catfish subject to the FMIA, plan to increase processing capacity for invasive, wild-caught catfish at their existing facility, have a State Aquatic Nuisance Species or Invasive Species management plan that includes catfish, current and active registration in the System for Award Management (SAM)
