What Is This Program?
What Benefits Are Offered?
Provides wage replacement benefits, medical care, and vocational rehabilitation for employees disabled by work-related injuries or occupational diseases. Includes death benefits for eligible survivors, covering funeral expenses up to a maximum of $3,000 and ongoing compensation based on the deceased employee's average weekly wage. Compensation for total disability is capped at 200% and a minimum of 50% of the national average weekly wage, with specific rules for lower average wages.
Who Is Eligible?
Industries: maritime, longshoring operations, ship-repair, ship-building, ship-breaking, federal government contractors (civilian employees), private industry (Outer Continental Shelf operations), nonappropriated fund instrumentalities (civilian employees of Armed Forces)
Region: navigable waters of the United States, adjoining waterfront areas customarily used in loading, unloading, repairing, or building a vessel, outside the United States on U.S. military bases or under a contract with the U.S. (Defense Base Act), Outer Continental Shelf of the United States (Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act)
Other Criteria: employees disabled from work-related injuries or occupational diseases, dependents of employees whose death is caused by covered injury, not covered by a state workers' compensation law (for certain occupations/settings)
