What Is This Program?

The NIEHS Hazardous Substance Basic Research and Training Program utilizes Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grants to support basic research directed towards understanding and attenuating the public health effects resulting from exposure to hazardous substances. The SBIR program uses a combination of research, technology transfer (commercially viable products) and communication strategies (technologies to translate and communicate environmental health research) to fulfill the mandate areas of Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) of 1986. Areas of research must be within scope of Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 and the SARA of 1986 and may include methods and technologies to detect hazardous substances in the environment; and basic biological, chemical, and physical methods to reduce the amount and toxicity of hazardous substances.
