The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) was launched in 2010 as a nonregulatory program to accelerate efforts to protect and restore the largest system of fresh surface water in the world by providing additional resources to help achieve the most critical long-term goals for this important ecosystem. What Is This Program?

The goal of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) is to restore and maintain the environmental integrity of the Great Lakes ecosystem, in accordance with the Clean Water Act and the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. EPA awards grants and cooperative agreements to support and advance the GLRI Action Plan.

Provides funding through grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts for diverse projects aimed at protecting and restoring the Great Lakes ecosystem. Activities include planning, research, monitoring, outreach, and direct implementation to address major threats like toxic substances, invasive species, and nonpoint source pollution.

Industries: environmental protection, water quality, conservation, research

Region: Great Lakes ecosystem, US Great Lakes region

Other Criteria: nonfederal partners (e.g., state, local, tribal governments, academic institutions, non-profit organizations, and businesses), projects focused on planning, research, monitoring, outreach, or implementation for Great Lakes ecosystem protection and restoration, activities advancing protection and restoration of the Great Lakes ecosystem in support of GLRI Action Plan IV and EPAโ€™s Strategic Plan
