What Is This Program?

The purpose of the Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP) is to protect agricultural use and related conservation values of eligible land by limiting nonagricultural uses of the land. The program protects valuable farm and ranch lands for future generations. To achieve that purpose, the Secretary of Agriculture is authorized to facilitate and provide funding for the purchase of conservation easements and other interests in eligible land that is subject to a pending offer from an eligible entity. The goals of the Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program are toโ€” Protect agricultural productivity by limiting nonagricultural uses of land; Preserve farmland for future generations; and protect prime, unique, or statewide or locally important soils, land containing historic or archaeological sites from conversion to nonagricultural uses, and land that furthers State and local farm and ranch lands protection program policies. This program was repealed by the 2014 Farm Bill, easements and 30-year contracts previously enrolled under WRP are considered enrolled in the Agricultural Conservation Easement Program.

Financial assistance, cost-share assistance, and technical assistance (resource assessment, practice design, monitoring) for landowners and organizations to implement conservation practices, restore wetlands, and protect agricultural lands and forestland through voluntary easements. Significant national funding is available through the Inflation Reduction Act and the Farm Bill.

Demographics: Indian tribes

Other Criteria: Landowners who want to maintain or enhance their land in a way beneficial to agriculture and/or the environment, Agricultural producers, Non-industrial forest managers, Indian tribes, state and local governments, and non-governmental organizations (for Agricultural Land Easements component of ACEP), Must own or lease the land to be conserved, Must establish a farm tract number with USDAโ€™s Farm Service Agency (for financial assistance), Must certify compliance with Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) limitations, Must certify compliance with Highly Erodible Land (HEL) and Wetland Conservation (WC) requirements (Form AD-1026), Provide an official tax ID (Social Security number or Employer ID), Provide a property deed or lease agreement
