Environmental Health Sciences - Research Projects

Department Of Health And Human Services, National Institutes Of Health

The mission of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is to research how the environment affects biological systems across the lifespan and to translate this knowledge to reduce disease and promote health. Environmental exposures considered range from chemical, physical, and biologically derived (non-pathogenic) factors humans are exposed to through inhalation, ingestion, or ocular or dermal contact, individually or as mixtures.

Jargon-free version

Helps researchers develop technologies to understand how environmental factors affect human health. Supports studies that explore exposure impacts and ways to reduce health risks.

What Is This Program?

Research Projects supported by NIEHS include the development of technologies to assess human environmental exposures and the biological impacts of exposure; mechanistic understanding of exposures on biological systems including the use of environmentally derived analytes as probes of fundamental biological mechanisms; epidemiological studies of the health effects of environmental exposures including the interactions between environmental and genetic factors; community engaged research; and the identification of strategies to reduce the burden of exposure and improve human health at the individual and population levels. Studies can involve human subjects, including clinical trials, or non-human or computational model systems provided that relevance to human health is well justified.
