What Is This Program?

The EL Disaster Resilience grant program supports research and collaborative activities that advance measurement science and standards in infrastructure materials, buildings and infrastructure systems, community resilience, and codes and standards. This includes community disaster preparedness to identify hazards, prepare, prevent, protect, mitigate, respond, and recover; earthquake risk reduction to identify risks, assess building performance, and improve resilience and functional recovery; infrastructure materials tools and methodologies development to improve building performance when exposed to chronic and episodic hazards; codes and standards to address extreme loads from disproportionate collapse, extreme winds, coastal inundation, and other disaster failure conditions; and benefit-cost analysis, life-cycle costing, multi-criteria decision analysis, life-cycle system science, decision science, and econometrics to evaluate new technologies.

What Benefits Are Offered?

advisorystandards developmentinformation dissemination

NIST conducts research to develop improved acceptance criteria and modeling parameters for structural components. These outputs are designed for incorporation into performance-based methodologies and standards/codes (e.g., for wind, earthquake, disproportionate collapse) to create more robust and efficient buildings, uphold public safety, and ensure greater risk consistency across multiple hazards.

Who Is Eligible?

Other Criteria: This is a NIST internal research project focused on developing design standards and criteria, not a program for external entities to apply for funding. The project benefits the structural engineering community, including designers, builders, operators, and standards developing organizations (SDOs).
