Emergency Watershed Protection Program

The objective of the EWP Program is to assist sponsors, landowners, and operators in implementing emergency recovery measures for runoff retardation and erosion prevention to relieve imminent hazards to life and property created by a natural disaster that causes a sudden impairment of a watershed.

What Benefits Are Offered?
The EWP program offers technical and financial assistance to help local communities recover from natural disasters. This includes funding for activities such as debris removal from stream channels, reshaping and protecting eroded streambanks, repairing drainage facilities, establishing vegetative cover, repairing levees/structures, repairing conservation practices, and purchasing EWP Buyouts. Federal cost share for emergency measures may not exceed 90% of construction costs in Limited Resource Areas.

Demographics: federally-recognized Native American tribe or tribal organization
Other Criteria: Eligible sponsors include cities, counties, towns, conservation districts, or any federally-recognized Native American tribe or tribal organization., Public and private landowners must work through an eligible sponsor., Projects must address imminent threats to life and property caused by floods, fires, windstorms, and other natural disasters that impair a watershed., Projects must provide protection from flooding or soil erosion, reduce threats to life and property, restore hydraulic capacity to the natural environment, and be economically and environmentally defensible., No federal or state disaster declaration is required for program assistance to begin., Landowners can directly apply for Floodplain Easement Projects when funding becomes available.
