The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is a voluntary USDA program which contracts directly with landowners and operators to cost-effectively implement conservation practices that conserve and improve the nationโ€™s natural resources. The programโ€™s objectives are to protect the nation's long-term capacity to produce food and fiber; to reduce soil erosion and sedimentation, improve water quality, and create or enhance wildlife habitat.

Participants receive payments to take environmentally sensitive land out of production and implement conservation practices that reduce soil erosion, improve water quality, and support wildlife habitat, helping protect the nationโ€™s long-term capacity to produce food and water.

What Benefits Are Offered?

Provides annual rental payments to agricultural producers and landowners for converting highly erodible and environmentally sensitive land to conservation covers (e.g., native grasses, trees, riparian buffers). Also offers cost-share assistance for up to 50% of the cost of establishing approved conservation practices. The program aims to improve water quality, reduce soil erosion, enhance wildlife habitat, and stabilize farm income. Contracts are typically 10 to 15 years.
