These grants are provided under Section 60114 of the Inflation Reduction Act, Climate Pollution Reduction Grants, 42 U.S. Code ยง 7437 (or Public Law 117โ€“169, title VI, Aug. 16, 2022, 136 Stat. 2076), which amended the Clean Air Act (CAA) by creating Section 137 for Greenhouse Gas Air Pollution Plans and Implementation Grants. Section 137 of CAA authorizes the EPA to fund planning grants to reduce carbon dioxide, hydrofluorocarbons, methane, nitrous oxide, perfluorocarbons, and sulfur hexafluorid

What Is This Program?

The Climate Pollution Reduction Grants program provides significant resources to state, Tribal and local governments to develop plans to reduce carbon dioxide, hydrofluorocarbons, methane, nitrous oxide, perfluorocarbons, and sulfur hexafluoride; and to implement measures from those plans. Resources available to states, air agencies, municipalities, and Tribes through the planning grants under this program will encourage these entities to create comprehensive pathways for reducing pollution. Implementation grants will provide significant resources to implement projects covered by plans to achieve significant emission reductions and improved air quality.

What Benefits Are Offered?

Provides nearly $5 billion in grants to states, local governments, tribes, and territories. This includes $250 million for noncompetitive planning grants and approximately $4.6 billion for competitive implementation grants, designed to support the development and execution of ambitious climate action plans.

Region: US states, local governments, tribal governments, US territories

Other Criteria: governmental entities, tribal entities, entities developing and implementing plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and harmful air pollution, at any stage of climate planning and implementation
