What Is This Program?

In accordance with Public Law 110-186, the organizations will provide information on small business ownership to service members and military spouses by facilitating and instructing the U.S. Small Business Administration’s “Introduction to Entrepreneurship” known as “Boots to Business” which is a course offered within the Department of Defense Transition Assistance Program (TAP). Additionally, these organizations will provide counseling, training, technical and financial skill development, comprehensive business assessments and mentoring to veteran, service disabled veteran, active duty, Reserve, Guard, and military spouse/survivor entrepreneurs and small business owners interested in starting new or expanding/diversifying established small businesses.

This program offers comprehensive support and resources for veteran, service member, and military spouse-owned small businesses. Benefits include various SBA-guaranteed business loans (e.g., 7(a), 504, Microloans, MREIDL), specialized entrepreneurship training programs (e.g., Boots to Business, VIP), one-on-one business counseling through partner networks, and veteran small business certifications. It also provides information on grant opportunities and access to surplus government property.

Business Size: small

Industries: manufacturing, wholesale, professional services

Region: United States, US territories, US possessions

Demographics: veterans, service members, military spouses, women veterans, service-disabled veterans, Reserve and National Guard members

Other Criteria: operates for profit, legally registered business, meets SBA size standards, able to repay loans with a sound business purpose, demonstrates creditworthiness (may be flexible for startups), not able to obtain credit on reasonable terms from non-federal sources (for some loan types), tangible net worth less than $20 million (for 504 loans), average net income less than $6.5 million for two preceding years (for 504 loans), qualified management expertise, a feasible business plan, and good character (for 504 loans), at least one-year of operating history (for some loan types), can produce timely and accurate financial statements (for some loan types)
