VA Outer Burial Receptacle Allowance Program

VA will provide a monetary allowance for any casketed burial in a VA National cemetery, or in a VA grant funded cemetery, where a privately-purchased outer burial receptacle has been used in lieu of a Government-furnished graveliner. This allowance is payable to the person who paid for the privately purchased OBR. In addition, VA will provide a monetary allowance for OBRs placed at the time of interment for casketed burials in a VA grant funded cemetery when the OBR is provided by the cemetery at no cost to the decedent’s family or other responsible party. The allowance for casketed burials in grant funded cemeteries is authorized only for burials that occur on or after January 5, 2023.
