What Is This Program?

The purpose of this financial assistance agreement is twofold: (1) provide armed escort for shipments of Foreign Research Reactor Spent Nuclear Fuel (FRRSNF) by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) while shipments are in transit anywhere within the State of South Carolina. No other agency in South Carolina can provide this service. (2) provide regulatory compliance inspections, radiological material emergency response, and public outreach activities associated with the shipment of Foreign Research Reactor Spent Nuclear Fuel (FRRSNF) to the Savannah River Site. SCDES possess skillsets, contacts, and resources that DOE-SRS would only be able to duplicate at a far greater expense, if at all, than the value of the grant.
