Awards are specifically intended to support traineeship programs that engage outstanding students to pursue and complete their degrees in USDA mission areas. Applicants provide clarity about the philosophy of their graduate training, and relevance to USDA mission sciences, NIFA priorities and national science education policies and statistics.

Grants to colleges and universities to establish traineeship programs that provide stipends and travel opportunities for outstanding graduate students pursuing masters or doctoral degrees in food, agricultural, and natural resource sciences.

Demographics: institutions with significant minority enrollments, Hispanic-Serving Institutions
Other Criteria: 1862 Land-grant Institutions, 1890 Land-grant Institutions, 1994 Land-grant Institutions, State Controlled Institutions of Higher Education, Colleges and universities having significant minority enrollments and a demonstrable capacity to carry out the teaching of food and agricultural sciences, Other colleges and universities having a demonstrable capacity to carry out the teaching of food and agricultural sciences, Research foundations maintained by eligible colleges or universities, Must confer a graduate degree (Master's or Doctoral) in at least one of the following Targeted Expertise Shortage Areas: animal and plant production, forest resources, agricultural educators and communicators, agricultural management and economics, food science and human nutrition, sciences for agricultural biosecurity, or integrative biosciences for sustainable food and agricultural systems, Must support outstanding graduate students in masters or doctoral degree studies
