To develop, implement, and evaluate successful or promising interventions, practices, and programs to prevent elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation, including adult protective services programs. Through this program, ACL hopes to demonstrate how existing research can be used to craft new, useful programs to address elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation and improve and enhance adult protective services programming.

What Is This Program?

FY 2017: funded projects are contributing to the evidence-base on successful approaches to reduce and ameliorate the harm people experience as a result of abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation, and to better understand what adult protective services practices produce the best outcomes. FY 2018: demonstration funding to states to improve their adult protective services (APS) systems statewide, including APS practice; services for those experiencing abuse; and APS data collection, reporting, and infrastructure, and the technical ability to provide comprehensive case component data to ACL's National Adult Maltreatment Reporting System (NAMRS). FY 2019: projects targeted at developing benchmarks for elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation prevention, intervention, and remediation/amelioration, such as investigations on: risk and protective factors for being a victim or perpetrator of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation; impacts of elder abuse on health and long-term care systems; and on the costs of care associated with experiencing abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
