What Is This Program?

The EPA’s Clean Ports Program funded zero-emission port equipment and associated infrastructure to reduce air pollution at U.S. ports, delivering cleaner air for communities across the country. It also funded planning activities to build capacity of port stakeholders to continue to reduce air pollution over time. This program built on the EPA’s Ports Initiative to help our nation’s ports address public health and environmental impacts.

What Benefits Are Offered?

The program awarded 53 grants for a total of nearly $3 billion (Inflation Reduction Act funding) to reduce air pollution at U.S. ports. This includes $2.8 billion for Zero-Emission Technology Deployment (funding zero-emission port equipment and infrastructure) and $150 million for Climate and Air Quality Planning (funding planning activities, emissions inventories, strategy analysis, community engagement, and resiliency measure identification).

Industries: ports, marine transportation, freight sector, air quality control, technology

Region: U.S. states, U.S. territories

Other Criteria: Port authority, State, regional, local, or Tribal agency that has jurisdiction over a port authority or port, Air pollution control agency, Private entity applying in partnership with an eligible entity (must own, operate, or use facilities, cargo-handling equipment, transportation equipment, or related technology of a port), Projects in disadvantaged communities experiencing poor air quality may receive priority points, Requires a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) and current registration with System for Award Management (SAM.gov)
